A group of students, convinced by their teacher, join the army just before World War I begins. We follow them through basic training and into the war, where the boys discover it’s not about glory, as they were lead to believe by their teacher, and that war is truly horrible.
The print used in this presentation was pretty nice. There are a couple of sparkles in various scenes, but nothing more than you might expect in a movie of this age. The sound is very good, with only occasional buzzing or level issues.
This isn’t a bad movie, but it has a couple things working against it. It’s very long, at almost two and a half hours. It’s also very slow. There are long periods where nothing much happens, or it’s the characters having inane conversations that don’t go anywhere. Lastly, it’s very heavy-handed.
